Sakura is might be a terrible character, but this episode is proof enough that she's not entirely useless and made considerable progress during the timeskip.
Unpopular opinion: Naruto made almost zero progress over the two year timeskip. He learnt rasengan in a couple of months as a kid, but fails to make any real improvement since then, as seen during the bell game with Kakashi.
